Debiopharm is a family-owned house in Lausanne and Martigny. It in-licenses discovery, takes it through the clinic, and hands commercial reach to larger partners — oncology and infectious disease, with a long record in triptorelin and oxaliplatin. The BioAlps twentieth-year series asked it to describe the cluster as a neighbour. This page is that testimony, read again on the day a new stone was laid.

A building as a sentence

On 12 September 2024 Debiopharm laid the foundation stone for a new building: some 3,500 square metres, 150 to 300 flexible workstations, to be finished in 2026. In Martigny, a year earlier, it had already broken ground on a CHF 30 million innovation building of 2,400 square metres, on top of some CHF 150 million invested in Valais since 2000. The sentence is not the sum. It is that making and reading still share a canton.

Internally the company speaks of drug delivery, targeting, and the IDEAL network with Lake Geneva universities and hospitals. “The world is our laboratory,” they wrote — and then, in the same breath, that too little of the in-licensed work had come from Western Switzerland. The archive we keep is that correction: a cluster is only a cluster if the next compound does not have to be fetched from elsewhere to be believed.
